Scenography For Medea and Edipo a Colono
Siracusa, Italy

Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas has designed the facility for the dramatic 2009 season of the National Institute of Ancient Drama.

An extraordinary debut for the two architects in the sign of the classic scenes have created for the 45th Cycle Classic Performances, scheduled at the Greek Theatre in Siracusa from May 9 to June 21 2009.

“Is reality what we see in the mirror or what is reflected? – Massimiliano Fuksas says – We have never wanted or thought to resolve the dilemma. There is always time to acquire the magic necessary to understand the origins and the core emotions. Beyond the image, the true point of departure”.
For the architect the element of reflection and inspiration for the design of the set has been the horizon. “A very simple horizon – he adds – that speaks of the cathartic, that is the landscape, place and action, for the conscience of the spectators, not today but yesterday”. As the landscape and the scenery have changed over time, the intention contained in the set design is the reconstruction of a lost horizon.

Both for “Medea” and “Edipo” performances, the Scenography is constituted by a concave mirror metal blade that reflects what is going around, which involves the public, reflecting and inviting reflection. On the floor of “Medea” scenography there are letters from the Greek alphabet and symbols. In the “Edipo” scenography there is a hill made of salt.
