Studio Fuksas wins the competition for a new landmark building in Pisa, Italy
The project Innovation Gate by Studio Fuksas has been awarded the first prize for the competition for the design of a new landmark for the “Citadel of Innovation” in Pisa, Italy.
The competition was held by Forti Holding SpA Group at the beginning of 2022. It had the objective of equipping the existing industrial area with a new construction for commercial and business use, as part of an overall development strategy for the Montacchiello area, called “Montacchiello 2025”.
The “Innovation Gate” is a contemporary and flexible transparent workspace box that can adapt overtime to the needs of users. It will become the new entering gate to the area and an attractive space for business and meeting, completing the existing built ecosystem.
The building is conceived as a synthesis of the surrounding landscape with the most avantgarde workspace design methods. The built volume is emptied and decomposed to create two autonomous portions that are staggered and separated, creating the opportunity for new overlooks and views. The internal public spaces are conceived as flexible workplaces for socialising and meeting. Two access courtyards to the building integrate public and commercial areas, creating a permeable space where light and landscape are spread. The central void will host a Sky Garden: a common space overlooking the sea conceived as the new landmark for the whole Montacchiello area.
