Alfabeto del Futuro: presentation of the project for the New Cable Car Station of Trieste

Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas took part in the event “Alfabeto del Futuro”, which took place in Trieste on June 23rd. At the presence of the Major of Trieste Roberto Dipiazza the event was the occasion to present the new project for the Trieste Porto Vecchio Cable Car Station, designed by Studio Fuksas.

Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas were interviewed by Massimo Giannini, Director of La Stampa: “We chose the hexagonal shape because it echoes the historical cranes of the Old Port. The project idea was born from the analysis and observation of the territory. In order to enhance and highlight the history of the city, the maritime industrial elements in the project site were underlined: harbour cranes, funicular supports, maritime constructions, electromechanical equipment and historical warehouses.” Said Massimiliano and Doriana.

The funicular station will be characterised by modular volumes in a sequence: a succession of hexagonal portals that mark the beginning of a path aimed at redeveloping the entire Trieste port area by reinterpreting the maritime industrial style from a contemporary perspective.

The choice of sustainable architectural materials and technologies, such as recycled aluminium, glass and photovoltaic panels, aim to increase the value and energy performance of the station while minimising its impact on the environment. Sustainability thus becomes the focus of the project, capable of generating clean energy to promote more responsible and sustainable behaviour towards the city.  Furthermore, in order to enhance the relationship with the territory, it was decided to use AURISINA stone, a local limestone rock typical of the quarries in the Trieste Karst (province of Trieste) used for the station flooring.
