Massimiliano Fuksas “Teaching and practice of architecture” International Conference, Accademia di San Luca

Massimiliano Fuksas is among the prestigious speakers at the International Conference “Teaching and Practice of Architecture” curated by Francesco Cellini, Franco Purini and Claudio D’Amato, which will be held from 3 to 4 June 2019 at Palazzo Carpegna, home of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca, in Piazza dell’Accademia di San Luca 77, Rome.
The Conference will be attended, among others, by Ivano Dionigi, Paolo Portoghesi, John Ochsendorf, Franco Purini, Paolo Zermani, Saverio Mecca, Enrico Bordogna, Orazio Carpenzano, Angelo Torricelli, Patrik Schumacher, Donatella Fioretti, Elisa Valero, Daria de Seta, Paolo Tombesi, Mario Botta, Alberto Ferlenga, Jesús Aparicio Guisado.

Massimiliano Fuksas will speak about “Formation and Profession” on June 4 from 10 to 13.
One hundred years after the birth of the first Italian School of Architecture (Rome, 1919), the conference aims to evaluate the state of teaching architecture in Italy today, comparing it with other models, European and non-European, verifying possible evolutionary or alternative lines. Today Italian schools of architecture are going through a serious structural crisis concerning the professional preparation of students and the quality of teaching. The inability of the current teaching staff to train young professionals is directly linked to its current recruitment mechanisms which favour the co-optation of professors without professional skills and experience. Among the consequences: the drastic drop in enrolments which, according to data elaborated by the CNA (National Council of Architects) and the CUIA (Italian University Conference of Architecture) have decreased from 2008 to 2017 by 40%, from about 84,000 to about 50,000 out of a total of 22 locations.
The need for a new teaching model based on the individual teacher/student relationship; on practical laboratory activity linked to applied research; on the relationship with the profession, where “knowledge” and “know-how” go hand in hand is fundamental in the transmission of knowledge.
