The day after: Massimiliano Fuksas “redesigning the living space in the post-covid house”, interview on La Repubblica
Massimiliano Fuksas was interviewed by Francesco Merlo about the open letter sent to the President of the Italian Republic.
Architect Fuksas, can our beloved houses where we all took refuge – 3 and a half billion refugees – infect us?
“They can become our graves. We need a law that forbids the construction of houses smaller than 60 sqm. We need to provide spaces for isolation as much as we now provide for garages and attics, and a whole common floor for smart working, following the American model where buildings have a free floor for fitness activities. And again, each apartment must have its own medicine kit with saturator, oxygen connection, thermometer, scale, basic protective equipment. Finally, the coronavirus opens our eyes to the foolish use of air conditioning that can spread any disease.”
In the article the four points expressed in the letter are explained:
1. Health: In the house of the future we will need a saturator, an oxygen supply connection, a camera and a PC to connect to the local health service.
2. Prevention: building a network between the inhabitants and the health personnel, a sensor control, food control and indicators to sanitize the spaces, useful for long-term patients and convalescents.
3. Flexibility: Designing buildings with dozens of apartments and also a flexible floor intended for communication activities such as smart working, smart learning or as a place for socializing.
4. Air: in the new buildings one of the main objectives must be air purification systems using UV lamps, or simple devices, in order to avoid maxi air conditioning units.
